A white carpet covers the earth, and bare trees look like the lines of a burin.

These winter landscapes, filled with tranquil air, seem to completely envelop our entire body and draw us into the depths of deep contemplation, despite the small space of only 20 centimeters square.

Michael Kenna, a photographer born in England and based in the U.S., began photographing Hokkaido in 2002, attracted by the poetic landscape of the island, especially the interweaving of snow and ice. Since then, Kenna has visited Hokkaido every year, capturing on film the fleeting encounters with his subjects in the beauty and wildness of the island, along with his memories of them.

In the harsh winter land, where death is a constant threat, we are healed by the warmth of the people we meet from time to time. A close and pure gaze, a simple composition, and the subtle trembling of light and shadow. Each print, created from a unique sensibility and outstanding technique, stirs the viewer’s imagination and is full of creative inspiration. It is truly a world of poetry without words.

This exhibition will feature “Hokkaido” by Michael Kenna, internationally acclaimed as a leading landscape photographer, as well as approximately 130 works photographed in various locations around the world over a period of more than 30 years.
